Abstract
Germ cell tumors (GCTs) are benign or malignant neoplasms, presumably derived from pluripotent or primordial germ cells. During the development of the embryo, germ cells migrate from the yolk sac endoderm usually to the genital ridge in the retroperitoneum, where the gonads develop (Patton 1953). Aberrant migration, however, can also occur, and GCTs can arise in extragonadal sites, mostly in the anterior mediastinum (Gonzalez-Crussi 1982). Histologically the same subtypes exist regardless of whether the tumors are located in the gonads or elsewhere. There is a difference in the incidence of malignancy, which is relatively low among ovarian GCTs and very high among testicular GCTs (TGCTs) (Talerman 1985).
