Sepsis and Strenuous Exercise: Common Inflammatory Factors

  • Chapter
Mediators of Sepsis

Part of the book series: Update in Intensive Care and Emergency Medicine ((UICM,volume 16))

Abstract

During the last decade, numerous studies of the effects of exercise on the immune system have been performed. Owing to the development and improvement of techniques for studying immune function in vitro as well as in vivo, there is at present a large body of data suggesting that strenuous exercise triggers an inflammatory response similar to that occurring in the presence of bacterial infection or tissue injury [1].
