Abstract

Recent interest in using low temperature phonon-based detectors to search for dark matter has emphasized the need to understand the spatial distribution of the phonon flux produced by a recoiling nucleus. The phonon distribution may reflect the recoil’s direction, which in turn can be used in identifying events caused by scattering of dark matter. It has been suggested [1] that there is an anisotropy in the primæval phonon flux (the phonons created immediately after the recoil) due to the creation of solitons whose range and amplitude depend on the recoil direction and energy. The solitons decay, emitting phonons. One can then look for traces of this wake in the measured distribution of phonons at the surface.
