Zusammenfassung
Nach Schätzungen der Weltgesundheitsorganisation sind in den tropischen und subtropischen Ländern mehrere 100 Millionen Menschen mit Schistosomen infiziert. Diese bis fast 2 cm langen Würmer sind die Ursache der Schistosomiasis oder Bilharziose. Von den meisten anderen Parasiten unterscheiden sich Schistosomen durch ihre intravasale Lebensweise. Schistosomen besitzen keine Cuticula auf ihrer Oberfläche. Man könnte daher annehmen, daß sie ein leichtes Ziel für die Immunantwort ihres Wirtes darstellen. Allein die Lebensdauer dieser Würmer von im Mittel mehreren Jahren zeigt jedoch, daß Schistosomen sehr effiziente Mechanismen besitzen müssen, mit denen sie die Immunantwort ihres Wirtes umgehen können.
