„Unter Sepsis oder Septikämie verstehen wir eine bakterielle Allgemeininfektion mit ausgeprägten Krankheitserscheinungen, die das Ergebnis einer dauernden oder intermittierenden Einschwemmung von Bakterien aus einem Sepsisherd in die Blutbahn darstellt“[15].
