The long-term prognosis of diabetes mellitus

Abstract

Statistics of the Joslin Clinic indicate that before the advent of insulin the average duration of diabetes from the time of manifestation to the time of death was 6 years, whereas by 1956/57 the average life expectancy of confirmed diabetics was more than three times as long [27] and it is reasonable to assume that the statistics to-day show a still more favourable picture. This trend is the consequence of insulin therapy, modern methods of treating infections and improving circulation, earlier detection of the disease, and better-trained physicians as well as patients. The value of blood sugar lowering tablets cannot yet be properly assessed but it is probable that these, too, play a significant role.
