Abstract

The study of low-frequency fluctuations has been hampered by the lack of a general theory of the ubiquitous phenomenon of 1/f noise. Nevertheless, for electrical systems, many experimental studies on statistical properties of 1/f noise are known, and we quote here some of them [1–5]. As in the case of thermal noise and of (not too weak) shot noise, the measured amplitude distribution was gaussian. BROPHY [1] noted some differences which he attributed to a nonstationarity of 1/f noise. However, other authors have verified the gaussian distribution law in a reproductible way with no indication of any nonstationarity [5].
