Abstract

Potassium belongs together with lithium, sodium, rubidium, cesium, and francium to Group IA of the Periodic System. All the alkali elements are univalent, electropositive, and form strong bases. The alkali salts and hydroxides are in general easily soluble in water and are almost completely dissociated in aqueous solution. Indeed, lithium differs somewhat from the other alkalies resembling more the alkaline earth elements. In nature, sodium and potassium are the most abundant of the alkalies.
