Zusammenfassung
Über das Gesamtgebiet der Insektenwanderungen existiert bis heute noch keine einzige zusammenfassende systematische Darstellung. Wenige ältere Zusammenfassungen, so die Arbeiten von de Serres (1842), van Bemmelen (1857), Bach (1858), Cornelius (1865) (besonders wichtig) und Sajo (1897 u. 1899) bringen lediglich eine Aufzählung der in der Literatur bis dahin niedergelegten Beobachtungen. Das gleiche gilt für die um die Jahrhundertwende in den Entomolog. Record erschienenen Aufsätze des englischen Lepidopterologen J. W. Tuttüber: „The Migration and Dispersal of Insects“ (1902 als Sonderdruck erschienen), welche die gründlichste und wichtigste Bearbeitung des Gesamtgebietes darstellen. Hier ist das gesamte bis dahin vorliegende Material gesammelt, aber nicht systematisch durchgearbeitet. Das Verdienst, in neuester Zeit die Aufmerksamkeit der Entomologen auf die interessanten und in vielfacher Hinsicht wichtigen Erscheinungen der Insektenwanderungen gelenkt zu haben, gebührt dem enschen Entomologen C. B. Williams, der seit etwa 15 Jahren, mit besonderer Betonung der Schmetterlinge, Angaben und Beobachtungen über Insektenzüge sammelt und auch selbst in Westindien, Mittelamerika, Ägypten und Ostafrika sehr wertvolles Material zusammengetragen hat.
