Abstract

A few years ago, relations between blood groups in the ABO-system and some diseases have been established by various authors (Lobstein, Manuila). In our last material of splenectomized cases of “hypersplenism”, we observed a significant correlation between this condition and blood group B (III). Indeed, in 18 cases splenectomized during the last 3 years, 7 patients (=39%) belonged to blood group B. In 10 of these cases there was no evidence of previous liver disease (viral hepatitis). In this group, the number of individuals belonging to group B was 5 (=50%). In the remaining 8 cases with “secondary” hypersplenism, the proportion was 2:8 (=25%).
