Abstract
Bringing together the formalism of the previous chapter and the semi-direct product theory described in Appendix 3, it is possible to embark upon an exploration of the structure of NRM symmetry groups. The treatment given in this chapter is certainly neither exhaustive nor systematic, but is intended to illustrate the application of our approach to some representative NRMs and, we hope, establish its practical significance. We shall in fact mainly be concerned with NRMs exhibiting some form of internal rotation (cf. [123, 125, 138]); nevertheless, §4.5 treats the symmetry group of the pseudorotating XY4Z molecule [68], while two ring-puckering models have been discussed in §3.4.
