Zusammenfassung
Innerhalb von 30 Jahren hat sich die Herzchirurgie zu einem eigenen Spezialgebiet entwickelt. Beginnend mit der ersten erfolgreichen Ligatur eines offenen Ductus Botalli durch Gross im Jahre 1938 sind in der Zwischenzeit, vor allem seit Einführung des extrakorporalen Kreislaufs (Gibbon, 1953) etwa 80—90% aller angeborenen Herzfehler operabel geworden. Bei 0,8% Häufigkeit, bezogen auf die Anzahl der Lebendgeburten, bedeutet dies, daß in der Bundesrepublik jährlich etwa 5 000 operable Herzfehler anfallen.
