Abstract
The relation between the nerve fibres and the sensory cells on the maculae and cristae has been subject to intense research since the last half of the 19th century, and perusal of the relevant literature shows that there are very great differences of opinion concerning the innervation of the sensory epithelium. This is especially noticeable in the earliest papers, which show clearly how greatly technique can influence the interpretation of histological findings. Many of the fixing and staining methods gave incomplete impregnation of the nervous elements, and this was obviously the reason for most of the discrepancies.
