Zusammenfassung
Soziale Beteiligung findet vor allem dort statt, wo mit dem Wohnort der Lebensmittelpunkt liegt. Im vorliegenden Beitrag wird das Ausmaß sozialer Beteiligung in Mannheim mit einem Fokus auf regelmäßige informelle Kontakte mit Freunden, Bekannten und Nachbarn sowie formelle Vereins- und Organisationsaktivitäten bestimmt. Mit Rückgriff auf den ‘Civic Voluntarism’-Ansatz werden die Hintergründe sozialer Beteiligung in der Großstadt analysiert. Die Ergebnisse zeigen, dass sich eine überwältigende Mehrheit der Bevölkerung in Mannheim entweder in informeller, formeller oder in beiderlei Hinsicht sozial beteiligt. Nur wenige Bürgerinnen und Bürger sind sozial isoliert und beteiligen sich weder an Vereins- oder Organisationsaktivitäten beteiligen, noch stehen sie mit Freunden, Bekannten und Nachbarn im regelmäßigen Kontakt. Insbesondere das Wohnen in Stadtbezirken, die in der Stadt die stärkste soziale Stellung einnehmen, fördert dabei formelle und informelle soziale Beteiligung gleichermaßen. Es ist das Umfeld, das hier den entscheidenden Unterschied macht.
