Zusammenfassung
Der Beitrag beschreibt die theoriegeschichtliche Entwicklung der Kultursoziologie in Nordamerika. Dabei wird neben einer Einordnung der gesellschaftlichen Entwicklungen und der darauf reagierenden theoretischen Debatten in der Kultursoziologie auch auf die Einflüsse des Cultural Turn und der Cultural Theory eingegangen. Der Beitrag nimmt dabei seinen Ausgang von einer Begriffsbestimmung und der sich daraus ableitenden Unterscheidung zwischen einer Sociology of Culture und einer Cultural Sociology.

Am 3. März 1991 wurde der Afro-Amerikaner Rodney King in Los Angeles aufgrund einer Tempoüberschreitung von Polizisten zunächst mit dem Auto verfolgt und anschließend brutal zusammengeschlagen. Dieser Vorfall wurde von einem Amateurfilmer aufgezeichnet. Das Video zeigt, wie King brutal misshandelt wird, während 17 andere Polizisten tatenlos zusehen. Als Konsequenz aus der Veröffentlichung dieses Videos entstand eine von harten Auseinandersetzungen und Schuldzuweisungen geprägte öffentliche Debatte um Polizeigewalt und systemischen Rassismus.
