Abstract

The emission legislation for diesel engines, both heavy duty and passenger car diesel engines, have been strengthened in the last years significantly. Currently no further reduction of emission limits is planned but still legislation changes will require further improvements as briefly summarized in this introduction chapter.

Figure 1 shows the past 5 years history for heavy duty engines – e.g. from Tier3 to Tier4 the NOx limits have been reduced by 90%. Based on this for heavy duty engines NOx aftertreatment systems have been introduced which operate with DeNOx efficiencies in the range 80% to 90% or in some cases even higher.
