Zusammenfassung
Als Student musste Castells (*1942 Héllin, Spanien) wegen seines Engagements gegen die Franco-Diktatur nach Frankreich fliehen, wo er sein Studium 1967 in Paris abschloss. Obwohl er wegen seiner Teilnahme an den Mai-Protesten 1968 aus Frankreich ausgewiesen wurde, konnte er dank seines Mentors Alain Touraine nach Paris zurückkehren. Dort untersuchte er in einer undogmatischen marxistischen Perspektive die Genese und Struktur sozialer Konflikte in modernen Metropolen, die er in seiner international viel beachteten Studie mit einem neuen Ansatz als Räume ungleich verteilten kollektiven Konsums beschrieb (La Question Urbaine 1972).
