Zusammenfassung
Der Irakkrieg war einer der Schlüsselmomente in der Präsidentschaft George W. Bushs. Seine Spätfolgen werden auch unter Barack Obama ihre Auswirkungen entfalten – im Irak selbst und in der Region, aber auch im Verhältnis Amerikas zu seinen Partnern und Verbündeten jenseits des Atlantiks. Dabei hatte Obama bereits als Kandidat für das Präsidentenamt ein ganz besonderes Verhältnis zum Krieg im Zweistromland: mochte dieser auch gut für Obamas Kampagne sein, so sei er doch schlecht für Amerika – verkündete Obama. Den Militäreinsatz im Irak zu beenden war sein zentrales außenpolitisches Gelübde. Als 44. Präsident der USA setzt er dieses nun um. Die Analyse der militärischen und politischen Entwicklung im Irak sowie der Lage in der Region legt nahe, dass Obama damit nicht nur ein Wahlversprechen erfüllt, sondern im besten Interesse seines Landes handelt.
