Abstract
While the pathomechanisms of allergic respiratory diseases such as hay fever or extrinsic bronchial asthma are rather well established, the role of allergic reactions in the pathophysiology of atopic eczema is still controversial. Two main currents can be detected in the history of the literature that try to explain the disease: specifically altered immune reactivity (i.e., allergy), on the one hand, and nonspecifically altered reactivity on the other [5, 18, 31, 36, 47, 52].
