Part of the book series: Topics in Applied Physics ((TAP,volume 71))

Abstract

In this chapter we review methods currently used to perform Monte Carlo calculations for quantum lattice models. A detailed exposition is given of the formalism underlying the construction of the simulation algorithms. We discuss the fundamental and technical difficulties that are encountered and give a concise survey of applications of quantum Monte Carlo methods to various quantum statistical lattice problems. New developments are illustrated and discussed in terms of two many-body problems, the Hubbard and the Heisenberg model.
