Part of the book series: Biotechnology in Agriculture and Forestry ((AGRICULTURE,volume 32))

Abstract

The peanut, also known as groundnut (Arachis hypogaea L.), and the chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.) are the two oil-protein-rich legume seed crops. Peanut occupies third place in the world as a source of edible oil. It originated in South America and is now grown in many countries, India and China being the largest producers (Table 1). Arachis possesses both diploid (2n = 20) and tetraploid (2n = 40) species. The important diploid ones include: A. benthamii, A. diogoi, A. duranensis, A. helodes, A. lutescens, A. repens, A. rigoni, and A. villosa; whereas the tetraploid ones are: A. glabrata, A. hagenbeckii, A. hypogaea, A. monticola, A. nambyquarae,A. rasteiro, A. salvagem, A. marginata, and A. prostrata. In addition, A. pusilla is octaploid (Krapovickas and Rigoni 1952).
