Abstract

The influence of electron correlation, relativistic and quantum electrodynamical effects on the electronic binding strongly increases with the ionic charge. In this chapter a review on the progress in measurements and calculations of the binding energies, fine and hyperfine structure intervals and the Lamb shift in highly charged ions is given. The schemes of coupling of the atomic orbital and spin angular momenta into the total angular momentum are considered as well.
