Abstract

Clear-cell sarcoma of tendons and aponeuroses (CCS) was first described and named by Enzinger (1965) and is currently recognized as a rare and distinct clinicopathologic entity among soft tissue sarcomas. Originally it was suspected that there was a relationship between CCS and synovial sarcoma (Enzinger 1965; Kubo 1969; Hajdu et al. 1977). The light-microscopic similarity to malignant melanoma, the occurrence of melanin in some cases (Enzinger 1965), and the ultrastructural finding of melanosomes (Hoffman and Carter 1973) led Chung and Enzinger (1983) to suggest that the term clear-cell sarcoma of tendons and aponeuroses should be changed to malignant melanoma of soft parts. However, melanocytic features are not consistently found, and differentiation along Schwann’s cell lines has also been observed (Kindblom et al. 1983; Azumi and Turner 1983; Ohno et al. 1986). The present knowledge of CCS, including electron microscopy, immuno-cytochemistry and cytochemistry, indicates that this entity is of neural crest origin presenting variable degrees of differentiation along melanocytic and Schwann’s cell lines.
