Abstract
Current collection always operates with sliding contacts. Even a trolley wheel slides considerably on the wire. The reason for introducing the wheel was the hope of less wear; but this was not gained. Actually, the wire usually wears more when the counter contact is a metallic wheel than when it is a carbon shoe.
