Abstract
Herpes zoster (HZ) is an acute localized infection of a sensory nerve and ganglion characterized by pain and vesicular eruption in a dermatomal distribution, resulting from the reactivation of a lifelong latent infection with the varicella-zoster virus (VZV) acquired during an earlier attack of varicella (chickenpox).
