Abstract
Chapter 3 presents a brief outline of the immune system focusing on its nature as an information system to bridge the gap between the immune system and the concept of immunity-based systems presented in Chap. 4. We focus on two theories: the network theory proposed by Jerne, and the clonal selection theory extended by Burnet, which will provide the backbone for immunity-based systems. From this somewhat biased perspective, the immune system will be characterized as:

a self-defining system that creates, organizes, and maintains the identity of the self

an adaptive system that implements an adaptive mechanism based on “selection” to realize the above self-defining system
