Abstract

Cancer of the anus comprises several different histologic types and accounts for 1%–2.5% of all malignant tumors of the large bowel. Several histopathologic varieties have been described requiring different therapeutic options. Knowledge about the histogenesis of the tissues of the anal canal is necessary to understand pathologic findings.
