Shewhart Control Charts for Individuals with Time-Ordered Data

Abstract

The analysis of time-ordered data is of particular interest to the quality engineer and control statistician to whom the time-series plot is a known as a “run chart”. Deming [1982 pp. 112–114 and 1986 pp. 67, 310–314] has been a strong proponent of the use of run charts for the analysis of process data. It has been the authors’ experience that many of the improvements that are made in industrial processes by using “statistical process control” (SPC) methods result from the use of simple run charts.
