Relationship Between Histamine and the Autonomous Nervous System

  • Chapter
Histamine and Anti-Histaminics

Abstract

A stimulating effect of histamine on the adrenal medulla was first observed by Burn and Dale (1926), causing a liberation of catecholamines which exert their characteristic effects on the blood pressure of the cat. This effect was confirmed by Szczygielski (1932) who noted a high sensitivity of the adrenal medulla towards histamine and also found that the effects of small doses of histamine could be abolished by nicotine. This inhibitory effect of nicotine has later been explained by its depolarizing action on the chromaffin cells. The histamine effect on the chromaffin cells is a direct one as shown by Siehe (1934) who demonstrated that it persisted after denervation of the adrenal medulla.
