Trotz des dramatischen Rückgangs in der Prävalenz des rheumatischen Fiebers und der rheumatischen Herzerkrankung in entwickelten Ländern, wie den USA, Europa, Japan und Hongkong innerhalb der letzten 25–30 Jahre, ist dieser Krankheitskomplex immer noch die häufigste Form erworbener Herzerkrankungen von Kindern und jungen Erwachsenen.
