Abstract
An expert system is being developed for the evaluation of road corridors from an engineering geological viewpoint.
The system will take into account relevant aspects of the geology, topography, water conditions and geotechnical properties of the ground along each route, together with the availability of construction materials. Elements of vertical alignment, physical constraints and infrastructure costs are then established which can then be integrated to provide a quantitative assessment for each horizontal alignment. This assessment is to be output primarily in the form of total cost linked to a probability of the road failing within its designated life span.
This paper outlines the advantages of an Intelligent Knowledge-Based System (I.K.B.S.) approach and a number of techniques are proposed.
The system is written in PROLOG and uses the augmented PROLOG software, APES (Hammond and Sergot, 1984), to provide interactive, explanatory and inferential facilities.
