Abstract

In the field of p-adic numbers we have an object that in many ways is analogous to the field of real numbers: it is a field with an absolute value, and it is complete with respect to the metric given by that absolute value. In fact, the similarities go deeper: ℝ and the various ℚ p , are completions of ℚ, hence contain ℚ as a dense subset; they are all locally compact; none of them are algebraically closed.
