Abstract

Experiments designed to test the possible effects of chemicals on the physiological clock aim to elucidate the biochemical mechanism of the periodicity. Diurnal changes of respiration and (in plants) of the photosynthetic capacity had been observed quite early. This suggested that the rhythm might be explained by the accumulation of respiratory or photosynthetic products. One might imagine that an accumulation of these substances could cause an inactivation of enzymes after which the substances would then gradually decompose, etc. This interpretation proved to be incorrect, as have all the other analogous explanations based on simple metabolic processes.
