Abstract
Since Bevis demonstrated the value of examining the amniotic fluid for assessment of erythroblastosis in the 3rd trimester, indications for amniocentesis have been greatly extended. Ultrasound scanning plays a central role in enhancing the effectiveness and the safety of this diagnostic technique and makes it possible to supplement the simple amniocentesis with more complicated diagnostic procedures such as fetal blood sampling and biopsy taking from the fetus.
