Zusammenfassung

Die Bezeichnung „Pulsus paradoxus“ stammt, wie erwähnt, von Kussmaul, der diesen Namen „teils wegen des auffallenden Mißverhältnisses zwischen Herzaktion und Arterienpuls, teils weil der Puls trotz anscheinender Unregelmäßigkeit in Wirklichkeit ein in regelmäßiger Wiederkehr aussetzender oder kleinerwerdender ist“ vorschlug. Aber schon früher wurde diese Pulsform in der Literatur beschrieben; es findet sich die erste diesbezügliche Angabe in einer Arbeit von C. J. B. Williams 1), The prognosis and treatment of organic diseases of the heart, in the London Journal of Medicine 1850, in der folgendes ausgeführt wird:
