Phleomycin, Xanthomycin, Streptonigrin, Nogalamycin, and Aurantin

Abstract

Phleomycin was isolated from a culture of Streptomyces verticillius by Maeda et al. (1956). It is a water-soluble copper containing antibiotic complex and is effective against a variety of bacteria. The antibiotic can be freed of its copper by treatment with 8-hydroxy-quinoline and can regain its copper on addition of CuSO4. The copper-free phleomycin had almost the same antibacterial activity as the copper containing antibiotic except against mycobacteria, where the former was less active (Takita, 1959). Some of the chemical and biological properties of phleomycin are listed in Table 1.
