Abstract

Nowadays, the treatment of heart rhythm disorders with cardiac implantable electronic devices (CIED) represents a well-recognized standardized therapy with low-risk, low-morbidity, and reliable results. This chapter represents an overview about background, indications, implantation techniques, complications, and complication management for a variety of CIED.

The first part of this chapter deals with nomenclature and modes of cardiac pacing. In conduction disorders requiring temporary or permanent pacing, the most appropriate pacing mode for each patient must be selected. Therefore, the indications and guidelines for different pacing modes are presented.

In the second part, the appropriate implantation techniques for transvenous and epicardial leads are presented.

CIED therapy in severe heart failure is an important part of its therapeutic portfolio. The cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT) is a well-established and effective option in patients suffering from advanced heart failure. In this chapter, we describe current CRT indications and implantation techniques. Furthermore, the cardiac contractility modulation (CCM)—a novel device therapy for advanced heart failure—is presented.
