Abstract

Orbital and charge states of 3d electrons are important parameters of 3d transition metal compounds for understanding the microscopic origin of various intriguing physical properties. Resonant X-ray scattering (RXS) at the K edge is a powerful technique for determining the spatial ordering of charge and orbital degrees of freedom. Hence, RXS studies have been performed globally to elucidate orbital and charge ordering in 3d electron systems. RXS directly detects the 4p electronic state at the K edge because the K edge is the \(1s\rightarrow 4p\) transition. The 4p electronic state reflects not only the 3d electronic states but also structural characteristics of an adsorbed ion. Therefore, to discuss 3d electronic states, it is crucial to understand the scattering mechanism of an RXS signal. Herein, we review studies of orbital ordering in perovskite-type titanate as a typical example. Then, we present applications of the RXS technique.
