Zusammenfassung

In diesem Kapitel wird die Entwicklung der heute weltweit angewandten Verfahren zur perkutanen dilatativen Tracheotomie anhand der historischen Ursprünge in Bild und Text dargestellt. Das grundsätzliche Prinzip der heutigen PDT hat sich seit der Beschreibung durch Ciaglia 1985 nicht mehr verändert, unabhängig von den heute verbreiteten technischen Varianten. Leser werden mit dem Ablauf, Vorteilen, typischen Schwierigkeiten und Komplikationen der einzelnen Verfahren vertraut gemacht, was die Entscheidung zur Auswahl der Methode erleichtert. Fragen und Entscheidungshilfen bei der Differenzialindikation der dilatativen Methoden in Abgrenzung zu chirurgischen Verfahren werden ausführlich besprochen.
