Zusammenfassung
Epilepsie ist eine der häufigsten neurologischen Erkrankungen. Wie die World Health Organisation WHO (2019) berichtet, leiden weltweit 50 Millionen Menschen an Epilepsie, davon 80 % in Ländern mit mittlerem oder geringem Einkommen. Bei der Mehrzahl der Patienten ist eine medikamentöse Behandlung erfolgreich. Von denen, die medikamentös nicht anfallsfrei werden und sich einer Operation unterziehen, erleben viele einen Rückfall. Insgesamt geht man davon aus, dass 20–30 % der Patienten an einer therapierefraktären Epilepsie leiden.
