Biosensors: an Introduction

Abstract

The major advances in sensor technology have come through the needs of medical care. The analysis of body fluids for a range of components is essential in modern medicine. Hitherto most of these analyses have been done by taking samples of blood, urine, etc., and submitting them to medical laboratory scientists for conventional wet chemical analysis. Usually the results took several days to obtain, check and report back to the doctors for assessment. This may be satisfactory in some situations, but is completely useless for others, such as with patients in intensive care, whose condition can change from minute to minute. With diabetics also, rapid analyses of blood glucose are needed.
