Zusammenfassung

Die Geophysik ist ein Teilgebiet der Geowissen- schaften und der Physik. Sie erforscht die physikalischen Eigenschaften und Vorgänge der Erdkruste und des Erdinneren, umfasst aber genauso die Physik der Ozeane, der Atmosphäre und den Einfluss der Planeten unseres Sonnensystems auf die Erde. Dabei kommen mathematische und physikalische Methoden zum Einsatz, unter anderem Feldmessungen, Experimente, Computermodelle sowie Fernerkundungsmethoden. Ziel ist es, die Physik unseres Planeten besser zu verstehen — von der Wettermodellierung über die Klimatologie bis zur Seismologie, Gravimetrie und Erdmagnetik. Roman Leonhardt beschäftigt sich vor allem mit Geo- und Paläomagnetismus — etwa mit der Rekonstruktion des Erdmagnetfelds mit Hilfe vulkanischer Gläser.

Abstract

Geophysics is a branch of geosciences and physics. It explores the physical properties and mechanisms in the Earth’s crust and interior, but also includes the physics of the oceans, atmosphere and influence of the planets in our solar system. This science uses mathematical and physical methods such as field measurements, experiments, computer models and remote reconnaissance. The goal is to understand our planet’s physics better — from numerical weather predictions and climatology to seismology, gravimetry and geomagnetism. Roman Leonhardt’s work involves geo- and paleomagnetism — such as the reconstruction of the Earth’s magnetic field with the help of volcanic glass.
