Somatoforme Störungen hat es in der Geschichte schon immer gegeben, wenngleich die Bezeichnungen, Ursachenerklärungen und Behandlungsmethoden unterschiedlich waren. Plakativ kann man folgende historische Entwicklungslinien aufzeigen:

  • Von der Hysterie zu den dissoziativen und somatoformen Störungen.

  • Von hysterischen Reaktionen zu Belastungsstörungen.

  • Vom Morbus Hypochondriacus zur hypochondrischen Störung.

  • Von der Neurasthenie zum chronischen Erschöpfungssyndrom.

  • Vom Schmerz als Konversionssymptom zur Schmerzstörung.

  • Von der Industriegesellschaft zu umweltbezogenen Körperbeschwerden.
