Summary
The antigenicity of various viral hemagglutinins (HA) of the HO and H1 subtypes was analyzed by means of monoclonal anti-HA antibodies of BALB/c origin which were produced in vitro. Anti-HA(PR8) antibodies were able to discriminate 44 (groups of) determinants, one specific for the HA of PR8 and the others present (in a crossreactive form) on a variable number of HA of the heterologous influenza virus strains. It was estimated that the 9 antigenically related HA included in the analysis represent a minimum of (2)7 antigenic determinants that are recognized by the BALB/c immune system, implying that the individual HA may contain approximately 15 to 65 distinct determinants.
