Zusammenfassung

Schlafentzug für eine Nacht kann bei Patienten mit Melancholie eine deutliche antidepressive Wirkung ausüben, wie Schulte bereits in den 60er Jahren in mehreren Kasuistiken erwähnte (Schulte 1966). Schulte ging so weit anzunehmen, daß „in Eingriffen in den 24 Stundenrhythmus die wichtigsten Entstehungsbedingungen und Auslösefaktoren für Zyklothymien zu suchen sind“ (Schulte 1971). Pflug und Tölle untersuchten 1971 in einer ersten systematischen Arbeit die Wirkung eines totalen Schlafentzuges bei Patienten mit endogener Depression, bei neurotischen Depressiven und bei Gesunden. Nur die endogen depressiven Patienten besserten sich aufgrund des Schlafentzugs.
