Abstract
The paper presents an overview on some selected facilities of the extended PROFIBUS-DP-Protocol. This protocol is worked out by the DP-working group of the PROFIBUS User Organisation and published as a PNO Guideline. We introduce the main principles of the new asynchron communication facilities, the device model and principles of addressing, the multi-network facilities and the alarm model. These new capabilities open new application fields for the protocol (e.g. in process automation).
