Part of the book series: Advances and Technical Standards in Neurosurgery ((NEUROSURGERY,volume 14))

Abstract

Four decades ago, Sir Geoffrey Harris postulated that the anterior pituitary is under hypothalamic neurohormonal control52 thus linking the brain with the endocrine system. This concept has led to a very fruitful search for the neurohormonal substances of the hypothalamus, which reach the anterior pituitary via the portal system, a vascular short cut between the neural tissue of the brain and the endocrine tissue of the pituitary113 (hypophysiotropic peptides), or which are directly secreted into the general circulation (posterior lobe peptides).

Dedicated to Prof. M. M. Forell for his seventieth birthday.
