Abstract

In the setting of airflow obstruction, acute respiratory failure of sufficient severity to request mechanical ventilation ocurs mainly in acute severe asthma and in the acute exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases (COPD). These clinical circumstances will be collectively referred to as „acute airway obstruction“.
