A Data Model for Engineering Design and its Implementation using a Link-Oriented Database

Abstract

A database that exploits the creativity of the designer is essential for CAD applications. A new model for efficiently organizing and manipulating shape meta-data is presented. Implementation by extending the DML of an existing database system and in the form of a visual interface is also discussed. Shape data can be created and viewed using the facilities in the interface. The advantages of this approach such as enhanced modelling capability, operational support for the design task, elimination of a complex query language and storage minimization are highlighted.
