Es wird zuerst eine kurze Einführung in die Problematik gegeben. Nach einer Analyse der Sonnenenergie folgt ein Abriß der Grundlagen der Wechselwirkung zwischen Licht und Materie. Einer Definition von Ausbeuten schließt sich zuletzt eine Besprechung der direkten Photolyse von Wasser an.
